Big Island Map

Big Island Map

Here on the Big Island of Hawai‘i, and throughout the State, many words, including street and place names are in the Hawaiian language. Although the Hawaiian language uses a similar alphabet to English, not all the vowels and diphthongs are pronounced the same. This can be a bit disconcerting to someone who has never been here, especially since some Hawaiian words are very long, but if you follow the pronunciation guidelines in this section, you should have little or no problem pronouncing Hawaiian words.

There are only 13 letters in the Hawaiian alphabet, 5 vowels and 8 consonants:

Each vowel has only one sound:
A – “ah” as in pot
E – “ay” as in hay
I – “ee” as in week
O – “oh” as in no
U – “oo” as new

Consonants sound as they do in English with 2 exceptions:
H
K
L
M
N
P
W – almost always pronounced v
‘ – called an ‘okina, it denotes a glottal stop like the break in airflow in the English oh-oh

The only other thing you may need to know is that each letter is pronounced separately, even when there are several vowels in row. Eventually you will be able to run all the sounds together to sound more fluid, but at first just go slowly, but at first just go slowly and pronounce each one.

Hope this helps, and good luck with your Hawaiian words!
