Vulcans Tame Antelopes
Monday, October 26th, 2009
The University of Hawaii at Hilo knocked off the Pacific West Conference’s only undefeated team when they beat Grand Canyon University 2-1 on Amauulu Field in Hilo, Hawaii.
The Vulcans are 7-8 overall and 6-3 in the PacWest while the Antelopes are 11-3-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the PacWest.
“This is the biggest win of the year because we finally have put together games that we’ve wanted to play and played with intensity,” UHH head coach Cam Camarena said. “In the end, we gave up possession because of the pressure of the game. Now the guys know that we can be in every game and we can win.”
The Antelopes got on the board just 16 minutes into the game when Kyle Ciliento got off a shot from the middle of the penalty box.
The Vulcans came back when a hand ball was called on the Antelopes in the penalty box. Vinnie Muscarella score on the penalty kick.
George Ichimaru was the beneficiary of a deflected ball in a scramble in the box. His shot deflected off of an Antelope defender and bounded over the goalie for the gamewinner.
“I know we’re building,” Camarena said. “There is growth in the program that is going on and sooner or later it was going to get to this point. Once you build a team that has heart, it makes people want to be a part of it. “
