Great first half followed by disappointment
Monday, October 26th, 2009
The University of Hawaii at Hilo had a strong first-half performance but didn’t maintain their focus and intensity as they dropped the Pacific West Conference match with Grand Canyon University 4-3 in double-overtime at Amauulu Field in Hilo.
The Vulcans are 3-9-4 overall and 2-5-3 in the PacWest while the Antelopes are 7-7-2 overall and 4-4-3 in the PacWest.
Goals by Jolene Crook and Gina Tumasone gave the Vulcans a 2-0 lead at the break Assists were given to Lauren Minami, Kelly White, Taylor Allen and Moani Hagiwara.
Just minutes into the second half, Shanna Brown was beaten on a one-on-one break which allow the Antelopes to pull within one.
Alysia Salvador goal at the 64:53 mark seemed to be an insurance goal the Vulcans needed but it wasn’t as the Antelopes stormed back with two goals.
“People pout because they wanted to play the game they wanted to play,” UHH head coach Cam Camarena said in referring to the different Vulcan teams in the two halves. “What happens is they don’t trust that possession ball works. When we possess the ball and switch, and they look up and there’s nobody there, instead of bringing it back so we can go to the weakside, we force it. “
The teams were nearly shot-for-shot with the Vulcans taking 21 and Antelopes 20 but the more aggressive Vulcans picked up 16 fouls to the Antelopes’ 10.
