Vulcans win re-match
Saturday, September 19th, 2009
In a re-match, the University of Hawaii at Hilo beat Hawaii Pacific University 3-1 on Amauulu Field in Hilo to claim the Vulcans' Pacific West Conference opener.
The Vulcans improved to 2-5 overall and 1-0 in the PWC while the Sea Warriors are 3-1 and 0-1.
A week earlier, Hawaii Pacific beat the Vulcans 1-0 in the Hawaii Challenge Cup championship match in a highly-physical match on the same field.
"I thought both teams came to play and the referee did a very good job," UHH head coach Cam Camarena said. "We got the better of them this time."
Logan Montenegro headed a crossing pass from Omar Garcia for the first score 32:30 into the match.
That score held up until the 56:24 mark when Luis Segovia lobbed a pass into the middle for George Ichimaru. His shot dribbled through three HPU defenders and goalie.
Eduardo Gutierrez scored on a penalty kick at 88:32 for the Vulcans final score.
HPU scored their goal as time ran out on a penalty kick.
