The University of Hawaii at Hilo opened Pacific West Conference play with a 1-0 win over Hawaii Pacific University on Amauulu Field in Hilo.

The Vulcans improved to 2-4-1 overall and 1-0 in the PWC while the Sea Warriors are 2-1-1 and 0-1.

"It was a really nice soccer game," UHH head coach Cam Camarena said. "You can tell that everybody is beginning to play our style."

Alysia Salvador scored the winning goal. With ball being played at mid-field and time running down in the first half, Emily Lambert and Paige Winchester worked together to give Salvador a one-on-one. As the HPU goalie came up to the ball, Salvador pushed the ball past her then bumped it in for the winner.

The defensive battle continued late into the match before a foul in the box gave the Sea Warriors an opportunity.

"I thought we were going to give it away on that penalty in the last seconds but that was a great save by Shanna [Brown]," Camarena said. "She is just playing out of her mind."

Brown punched Amber Fuller's shot for the top right corner over the goal post.

"I can see that they are learning the game and trying to play our style of possession and moving," Camarena said. "We're still panicking a little but it is definitely a nice win."
