Petaluma, Calif. – Three holes was the difference between the University of Hawaii at Hilo golf team making a leap up the leader board or being grounded after the second round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Northwest/West Super Regional at the Adobe Creek Golf Club.
Starting the round on the back nine, the Vulcans at one point were at 9-under-par on the day. But the par-4, seventh hole proved to be the stumbling block as the Vulcans carded three triple bogeys, a bogey and a par to lose seven strokes. The team then added two strokes on the next two holes. Hilo, Hawaii – The University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball team capped off the 2007 season with a doubleheader sweep of Hawaii Pacific University at Wong Stadium with scores of 10-7 and 4-3.
For seniors Joe Davis, Emil DeAndreis, Jeff Germain, Dustin Gilmore, Michael Higa, Dayne Ogawa, Tyler Safford and A.J. Satele it was a fitting farewell to their collegiate careers.

Hilo, Hawaii – Although the University of Hawaii at Hilo baseball’s team hasn’t dominated the diamond as they once did, the program has produced a two-time University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Male Athlete of the Year in Michael Higa.
Higa, a senior infielder, has a .408 batting average heading into the series. He has seven doubles, a pair of homeruns and 19 RBI. His batting average is 40-points higher than any Vulcan since the program moved to the NCAA Division I level in 1994. (Full Story...) |

Brittany Dock the lone senior on the University of Hawaii at Hilo softball team not only ended the season with 28 singles, seven doubles and one home-run with 13 RBI earned a batting average of .359. Adding to that batting average is an on base average of .438 and a fielding average of .922, while maintaining her 3.5 GPA majoring in Kinesiolgoy.

QUEEN CREEK, AZ – By capturing the 2008 Hawaiian Airlines PacWest Men’s Golf Championship and taking fourth finish in softball, the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo athletic program has claimed the inaugural Pacific West Conference Commissioner’s Cup.
The PacWest Commissioner’s Cup is the all-sports championship started this year to honor the top athletic program in the league.

Yannutz Awarded Prestigious Scholarship

Brian Yannutz, a sophomore majoring in marine science at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, has been awarded a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hollings Scholarship.
“I hope to use this award as a stepping stone for other opportunities with NOAA and to pursue a doctorate degree in marine biology,” Yannutz said. “Eventually, I’d like to conduct research on the Great Barrier Reef and help stop the exploitation of the world’s oceans through international collaboration.” (Full Story...) |
